Backward looking

After forward thinking is inevitable that we do a little backward looking. Nostalgia! Not to the days of doing work but to carriages that used to be on the railway.

Richard was about to move house when the shutdown came. So all the puzzles were obviously packed away. Having been Head of Department for around 19 years he has spent lockdown thinking back to all the carriages that have spent time at the railway. The list is long.

Dave Hancox has come up with a couple of  adjustments

Another Mk2 belonging Alan & Tracy Lear, was BSO9410. This arrived in 1991 and I think this went with all the others. 
The other is BSK 35006, which was owned by the late Brian Hinkley. This also arrived in 1991. 
It moved to Long Marston in February 1998, where it was restored. 
It was sold to Mid Norfolk in 2011 and they sold it to Ecclesbourne Valley in 2016. 
By a strange twist of fate, this meant that it rejoined SO 3727, CK 15849 and SK 24918, which had been under restoration at Long Marston, when we were forced to move the vehicles as the site owners required the area we occupied.

Anyone else know otherwise?

By the way in case you have forgotten what a carriage looks like this is one we were working on earlier. 4772



Hopefully by the time we return to the works it will have magically moved to the jack road and been replaced by a carriage from the maroon rake.



Of course we are still looking forward if only on paper at present with both the HRA and the ORR issue 'guidance' notes on restarting

from an original design in 1898 Somehow the Michelin brothers, AndrĂ© and Edouard, thought having a mascot for their tire company would be a good idea. An even better idea, they figured, would be to model him after a stack of — you guessed it — tyres. 
However, it apparently never occurred to the siblings, that the original Michelin Man looked a little like a mummy. The rubbery man was initially drawn holding a goblet of nails and glass, exclaiming in Latin: "Nunc est bibendum!" (Now is the time to drink!) they were well ahead of their time, to accompany the slogan "Michelin Tyres Swallow All Obstacles." 

Social distancing isn't an issue for some they have their PPE sorted already

 The pool Is warmer than the lake at the bottom of the garden but the lake does provide a very nice area to socially distance with a glass of wine.


My wife doesn't understand the word relax - this is the surplus stock of plants loaded for the trip to the daughters house (now known as the allotment) where we offload the surplus every year.



Whereas Cheryl clearly does relax. She has stocked up with more cider!

Not on the  *Furlough Merlot* then.

Wine consumed in an attempt to relieve the frustration of not working.

The glaring issue during a videoconferencing call that nobody feels able to mention. E.g. one participant has dramatically put on weight, suddenly sprouted terrible facial hair or has a worryingly messy house visible in the background.

Thanks for the blog. Always welcome. And thanks for the mention too.
For my part in beating the lockdown, I have now finished my 12" to the 1' scale (full size for those not up with the old imperial units) GWR signal box of a ficticious location called Fernlea. It includes a 21 lever frame which can be used but is made of wood rather than metal. Also the token instruments are made from cardboard and tokens from wood and tube!

A fascinating list of coaches that have been and gone. Quite a number of scrapings which superficially sounds somewhat tragic. I wonder why apart from some sacrifices for spares. I read in the current issue of a railway magazine that another heritage railway which has mark 1 maroons and chocolate and creams find the maroon is more weather resilient than the others. Is that the GWSR experience as well? If so I wonder why.

Thank you for a very interesting blog and a reminder of what has come and gone! I was very sorry to see the BR built Hawksworth brake coach depart as this would have been a good vehicle to have run with the Mark 1 stock. Lots of photographic evidence of this type on our line. However, I know that a great deal of work would have been required and probably separate sponsorship. It is at least still preserved, albeit at Didcot GWS.

Both colour schemes fade without shed protection the cream is perhaps the worst of the 3 colours. Varnish definitely helps preserve the colour but we found the cylinder oil flying off locos eats into it and causes bad streaking. Other railways don’t seem to suffer this. We think,is to do with the tunnel. We may experiment again on a maroon carriage it may not show as much as it does on the cream.
The one catch with the maroon is the cost of the paint nearly double that of the chocolate!

Many of those scrapped carriages were only ever acquired for spares and once stripped the rest was disposed of. We are still using some of the parts thus acquired as we do restores now.
